In December 1981, I had two lengthy sessions with David Lynch in his office at Universal Studios, where he was working on the script for Dune (at that time, in collaboration with Chris DeVore and Eric Bergren, who had written The Elephant Man; later, they left the project and he produced the final shooting script by himself). These sessions were not interviews in any formal sense (I didn’t know enough about what I was doing to manage that!), but rather conversations which ranged over a number of subjects, following whatever threads arose. Later in the week, I did a follow-up by phone from my hotel, and then again in February by phone from Winnipeg, after I had transcribed all my tapes and begun the first draft of my article.
