The Magic Kingdom

When I was going in for my recent rotator cuff surgery, I asked if it was possible to record the image from the arthroscopic camera. I was told it could be done, and when I left the clinic staff handed me a DVD. It took me four weeks to get up the nerve to take a look and I have to admit that I was disappointed that the disk didn’t include the full ninety-minute procedure. But the handful of still images and two brief video clips are surreal and strangely beautiful … reminding me of David Lynch’s fascination with the organic textures he found when dissecting various small animals.

I honestly can’t identify what’s visible in these images; they’re so abstract, yet visceral that it’s difficult to imagine that they show something that’s actually inside me …

The videos are even stranger … I think they show a “before” and “after” …

  1. I laughed, I cried. It was true cinema. I especially liked the round thing near the end of the first film. And what they say about sequels must be true…it wasn’t as good as the first one.
